First of all, NEVER use the term, 'frat." It is considered disrespectful and nothing but an immediate turn-off to fraternity men. Please understand, I really do wish the best for you in your quest for the right fraternity to join. I do not blame you for hating on the fraternities.one bad apple (or a basket full) can ruin the experience and reputation of everyone. Of course, you have to check it out yourself to ensure that this is true. I am also sure that some of the other fraternities do not do such things, either. But I also have it on firsthand information provided me by others that SAE NEVER does that crap. I know that some fraternities spike drinks, force you to do horrific criminal, drug-related, sexual, and/or otherwise mortally dangerous things. Please accept my deepest heartfelt condolences for the loss of your friend this bullshit of forced binge-drinking (not to mention drugs, extreme physical abuse, and betrayal of the trust of good kids that just want to be their brothers) is what destroys entire teaches neither character nor survival-just endangers the individual, the institutions (i.e., the school as well as the fraternity) and ruins everybody's lives. I only hesitate to be the first to identify that fraternity by its letters publicly because of their many kindnesses and their loyalty to me-which I always returned in kind-from back in the day. But the fraternity in question was not considered "legitimate" by either its National headquarters or the University as it had first been officially de-recognized many years earlier (the first major fraternity to suffer this fate back in Fall 1997-I was Student President then, and had never joined a social/general fraternity, just various academic and pre-professional fraternities) in the wake of the Princeton Review's published list of top 'party schools' when UAlbany rose to #3 on the list).the fraternity that killed your friend was underground and considered a 'rogue' fraternity (basically, a gang!) as there was a legitimate chapter that enjoyed recognition at the official level and many students were actually confused by two rival entities sharing identical letters.
